Grappling with Transportation Emissions Focus of Next Meeting

Bardaglio & Hoebbel to Speak on June 19

Peter Bardaglio, the executive director of the Ithaca 2030 District, will present an overview of the 2024 annual progress report at the upcoming.quarterly meeting.

It is the sixth annual report issued by the Ithaca 2030 District. This year’s report was compiled with the assistance of Joey Armstrong and Jessie Chen, our two Cornell engineering interns this spring.

The good news from the report is that for the second year in a row, the district met its 2025 targets. In doing so, the district realized overall energy savings of 36% from the baseline last year and used 55% less water compared to the baseline.

Since the pandemic year of 2020, commuter emissions has represented the district’s biggest challenge. Results from the annual commuter survey indicated an uptick in 2024 in the average emissions per commuter.

For the first time, the report includes similar data from the County and City, and results in both depicted an even more problematic picture.

Reflecting the broad awareness that reducing transportation emissions is the key to the City meeting its goal of carbon neutrality by 2030, the City Sustainability Office secured support to examine the problem in more detail.

As part of this effort, Tom Hoebbel was recently contracted by Clean Cities of Central New York (funded by the US Department of Energy) to work with the City Sustainability Office on putting together a roadmap toward sustainable transportation in Ithaca/Tompkins.

Hoebbel, a resident of Tompkins County for over 30 years, has been meeting with multiple transportation groups throughout the county over the past several weeks and will incorporate the data and recommendations into a Sustainable Mobility Plan later this summer.

Tom will share his experience so far in engaging with these transportation groups and the initial steps towards developing mobility plan at the quarterly meeting.

Be sure to attend the 2030 District quarterly meeting on June 19 to participate in this important discussion about the chllenge of reducing tramsportation emissions.
