June 1, 2022, Victoria, BC — The Greater Victoria 2030 District is a finalist for the Real Estate Foundation of BC (REFBC) 2022 Land Awards. The Land Awards celebrate leadership, innovation, and collaboration in land use in British Columbia in five categories: land use and conservation, built environment, freshwater, food lands and real estate. The Greater Victoria 2030 District is nominated as one of four finalists in the built environment category. Winners will be announced on June 9th at the Land Awards Gala.
This nomination acknowledges the 2030 District’s successes in bringing together stakeholders from commercial real estate, local and provincial governments, academia and utilities to achieve affordable and efficient carbon reductions within Greater Victoria’s built environment.
Cora Hallsworth, Manager of the Greater Victoria 2030 District said, “I’m thrilled our work is being recognized by Real Estate Foundation of BC. The Greater Victoria 2030 District is a unique public-private partnership that showcases we can do more together to combat climate change. I’m excited to build on our successes and continue our part to reduce the carbon impacts of the built environment in Greater Victoria.”
Since launching last year, the Greater Victoria 2030 District has made steady progress toward its goals. Participating buildings are more than halfway to their energy reduction target – to use 50% less energy than a typical comparable 2007 building – and are already producing 44% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to a typical 2007 building.
Damian Stathonikos, President of BOMA BC, the host of the 2030 District, said, “Our collective efforts are future-proofing commercial real estate in Greater Victoria and show by example what is possible. We heartily encourage more buildings in Greater Victoria to join the 2030 District and take advantage of the peer network and supports we’ve been able to create.”
The Greater Victoria 2030 District supports its members through:
- A peer network and access to specialists, a University of Victoria research team and government representatives.
- Procuring services to reduce costs and enhance performance of energy and resiliency retrofits.
- Providing energy benchmark reports and audits to help reach ambitious energy and emission reduction targets.
Funding for the District is provided by the City of Victoria, District of Saanich, CleanBC Building Innovation Fund, and FortisBC.
