The New York City 2030 District

NYC2030 is a Private / Public Partnership of property, service and community stakeholders leveraging public support and collaborative action to spur sustainable innovation and equitable climate progress.

NYC 2030 District (NYC2030) is a nonprofit private-public climate action partnership, one of over 20 such districts in North America. NYC2030 is a catalyst to collaboratively advance sustainability and resilience projects, programs and practices at the local level.

Harnessing the full potential of sustainability in a targeted district will achieve greater and more equitable prosperity, energy security, and climate protection for New York City. NYC2030 will advance the goals of NYC’s Climate Mobilization Act and NY State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. We will provide important resources, enabling community benefits, energy cost savings and improved property values for our stakeholder partners while demonstrating how to mitigate and adapt to climate change on an urban scale.

NYC2030 is part of the 2030 Districts Network® which works toward dramatic greenhouse gas reductions from buildings and cities through a shared vision of sustainability, environmental justice and economic growth. Districts encompass over 600 million SF of pledged real estate, and cooperate in a vibrant alliance. Working at the district scale, we engage in focused programs to develop replicable and scalable solutions.

Our objectives are to demystify the complex web of policies, programs, incentives and services; connect property, service and community partners together to share information; facilitate aggregated project delivery; and foster collaboration across all climate sectors. NYC2030 is building a living urban laboratory to confront climate change.

The NYC 2030 District boundary containing Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn’s dense commercial zones with adjacent residential, institutional, and industrial areas will facilitate the modeling of urban climate solutions. We welcome satellite areas and affiliate members from throughout New York City.

We are engaged in consultations with local businesses, professionals, civic institutions, community organizations, and elected officials. Our mission incorporates two unique aspects of New York City. A great deal of work addressing climate change is already underway in the public and private sectors. And the city is composed of a wide spectrum of varied neighborhoods, institutions and interests.

NYC2030 has completed Heat/Cool Smart Brooklyn, a NYSERDA campaign promoting green retrofits in Brooklyn; has extensive civic partnerships with CUNY Building Performance Lab and others leading organizations; and is a past resident member of the Urban Future Lab. Current property partners cover over 21 Million SF of pledged property including the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Time Equities, The New School, Pratt Institute,  and Greenthal Management.

Linked In A Powerful Network

The 2030 Districts Network was established to lead the effort to help newly forming Districts and to coordinate existing District resources and collaborations in cities across the North America.

Our objective is for 2030 District national collaborators and partners to have equal access to the support and resources needed to achieve the 2030 Challenge for Planning targets.

2030 Districts are rapidly emerging as a new model for urban sustainability.

Our 24 established districts nationwide, made up of more than 1,650 organizational members, have committed over 618 MILLION SQUARE FEET of commercial building space to address climate change.

Achieving District-Wide Goals Together

2030 Districts are committed to reducing:

Building Energy Consumption

by 50%

Building Water Consumption

by 50%

Transportation GHG Emissions

by 50%

by the year 2030

2030 Districts are meeting incremental reduction targets for new and existing buildings set by the 2030 Challenge for Planning, which was issued by Architecture 2030, a non-profit organization committed to transforming the built environment from a major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions to a central part of the climate crisis.

Private-Public Partnerships

2030 Districts are organizations led by the private sector, with local building industry leaders uniting around a shared vision for sustainability and economic growth – while aligning with local community groups and government to achieve significant energy, water, and emissions reductions within our commercial cores.

Property owner/manager/developers join a local 2030 District to help them make significant changes to their properties to create reductions necessary to transition to a low carbon economy.

A Successful 2030 District is a PRIVATE-PUBLIC PARTNERSHIP comprised of:

Property Owners and Managers

that own, manage, and/or develop real estate within a District boundary

Services Stakeholders

providing related services within a District boundary

Community Stakeholders

representing either non-profit organizations or local government
