SUMMARY:City of Cleveland Event: Cleveland Nonattainment Area Reclassification
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland area does not currently meet the 8-hour National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ozone as required by the Clean Air Act.  The area is currently classified as “moderate nonattainment” and may be reclassified to “serious nonattainment” as a result of continued ozone levels.  This reclassification will require rule changes in Ohio’s Administrative Code for certain stationary sources in the area\, which is required by the Clean Air Act.  In preparation for these potential rule changes\, Ohio EPA has begun early stakeholder outreach efforts and is accepting public comment. \nCleveland Division of Air Quality invites residents and stakeholders to learn more about what this means and learn how to get involved in the rule-making process.  Please join us for a virtual information session with a presentation by the Assistant Chief of the Division of Air Pollution Control at the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency\, Jennifer Van Vlerah.  There will be two sessions held on the following dates: Tuesday\, October 3 from 11:30AM – 12:30PM and Wednesday\, October 4 from 5:30PM – 6:30PM. Both sessions will be recorded and made available for those who wish to attend\, but cannot make it. \nAlong with time for questions and answers\, these sessions will provide information on \n\nOzone and the Cleveland-area current status\nProposed rule changes to Ohio’s Administrative Code\nHow to submit public comment on the proposed changes\n\nClick here to register.  For questions on the information sessions\, please reach out to Christina Yoka\, Chief of Air Pollution Outreach at Cleveland Division Air Quality\, by email at cyoka@clevelandohio.gov or (216) 664-2129.

SUMMARY:BUILDING EDUCATION SERIES 2024: HOW BUILDING CODES CAN CHANGE THE GAME
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Event: \nBuilding codes set the minimum standard for building efficiency.  In this session we will discuss how code has contributed to creating a healthier\, safer\, and more operationally efficient built environment. We will review how simply adopting the most current code can help us build better buildings and begin to address the built environment’s impact on climate change.  Our speakers will compare how Ohio code\, which has recently been updated\, stacks up to the rest of the country and the midwest.  We will learn how Boston was able to incorporate electrification in their code requirements which supports their long term municipal sustainability goals.  We will leave time for an open discussion and Q&A on how building codes can help us mitigate the effects of climate change.\n\n\nModerator: Matthew Setzekorn\, Principal\, Emerald Built Environments\n\nSpeakers:\nEmma Hurbanis\, Building Codes and Policy Associate\, Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance\nDouglas Fentz\, Emeriti Professor\, Ferris State University\, ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer\nJacob Knowles\, Chief Sustainability Officer\, BR+A Consulting Engineers\nColin Schless\, Director\, Client Decarbonization Services\, Turner Construction\n2 continuing education credits for: BOMA\, AEE\, ASHRAE\,  AIA HSW\, certificate of attendance available for self reporting for Professional Engineers\, LEED and others. \nTo self report credits for USGBC LEED Professionals find instructions here. \n$15 for members of AIA\, ASHRAE\, 2030 Districts\, Cleveland State University\, Greater Cleveland Partnership\, USGBC\, City of Cleveland \n$20 for non-members \nStudents attend for free \nZoom link will be sent after registration in complete. \nTHANKS TO OUR EVENT SPONSOR TURNER CONSTRUCTION \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:AIA Cleveland Event: Sandfest
DESCRIPTION:This is an AIA Cleveland event: \nEvery summer\, AIA Cleveland goes to the beach to raise funds for the ACE Mentor Program! \nOur chapter’s signature event combines volleyball and sand castle construction to present a unique opportunity for Cleveland architects and designers to engage with the public on one of Cleveland’s premier beaches (Edgewater Beach just west of Downtown Cleveland). \nLast year\, in our 7th annual event\, we raised $8\,000 dollars for the ACE Mentorship Program Scholarship Fund. Thanks to Independence Excavating and through the assistance of Turner Construction and the Cleveland Metroparks we were able to raise a generous amount for ACE! Winners included Vocon (Best of the Beach and Runner-Up); GPD Group(Best Overall); Perspectus (Volleyball Runner-Up) and Vocon (Volleyball Winner). \nWe are thrilled to unveil the theme for this year’s Sand Fest: “Adventures in Pop Culture”! Prepare to show off your artistic flair as we dive into the worlds of beloved characters\, iconic scenes\, and unforgettable moments from film\, television\, and beyond. Whether you’re a fan of superheroes\, classic cartoons\, or timeless movie moments\, this theme offers endless possibilities for creativity and fun. We can’t wait to see how you bring these pop culture adventures to life in the sand. \nThe ACE Mentor Program is an after-school mentorship initiative that teams fourteen CMSD student teams with architecture\, construction\, and engineering professionals to respond to a Cleveland-based RFP and encourage consideration of careers in design & construction. All proceeds raised go to the ACE Mentor Program scholarship fund. \nSee details and registration on the AIA webite

SUMMARY:Tour Series 2024: Maltz Performing Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of the Maltz Performing Arts Center.  This is a 2022 Green Building Challenge winner!  This project’s focus was to consolidate Case Western Reserve University’s music and performing arts programs at one location. We’ll learn about the unique design features that compliment the temple’s distinctive golden-hued dome.  This building achieved exemplary energy performance\, targeting a 30% reduction from similar buildings\, through the HVAC system selection and tight building envelope. Major program elements include the largely opaque boxes sheathed in panels of limestone reminiscent of the stonework on the original temple. Stone-faced portions\, including the lobby\, are separated with floor-to-ceiling glass\, creating the effect of a solid form with a crystalline core.  Join us to learn about this LEED Gold project’s many sustainable features and tour this facility with magnificent views of the Nord Family Greenway. \nTour 4:00 – 5:00 PM \nHappy hour following the tour – location tba \nSpace is limited to 25 participants \nThanks to our event sponsor\, a Cleveland 2030 District professional partner DLR Group \nREGISTER HERE
